New Teachers

If you are new to the profession – congratulations! You have chosen the most rewarding, and most challenging, profession there is. The Meridian Education Association is dedicated to this profession and to your success in the classroom.
We know how overwhelming your first few years of teaching can be and that considering joining the professional organization is just one more thing to add to your to-do list. Here are some reasons why you would want to join.
- Our negotiating team met with the district’s team in December and agreed upon salary packages for the next 2 years. Only MEA members have the right to vote!
- The negotiating teams also agreed upon language items. One of the most important for new teachers is that you must take 12 credits in order to be eligible to move over on the salary schedule. However, you now have the ability to choose which classes you would like to take instead of being told which ones you have to take.
- We continuously work with district personnel to resolve payroll, sick leave, years of service, and salary schedule placement.
- We attend meetings with teams, principals, and/or district personnel at the request of our members.
- We hold monthly informative meetings and strive to keep our members informed on the happenings within the district.
- We teach professional development courses for credit. Our upcoming classes include:
- Keys to Financial Health for you and your students offered by IEA Member Benefits for 1 credit – Contact Jaime Russell to register 344-8336.
- Advocacy Training offered by MEA for 1 credit – only $60. February 27th 5pm-9pm & Feb 28th 8am-5pm. Contact twaltner@idahoea.org to register.
- Sparks Retreat is offered in June in McCall for teachers in their first 5 years. We spend 3 days together exploring the association and focusing on issues of concern for newer teachers including classroom management, student behaviors, assessment, time management and more.
Check out the New Teacher Resources page for even more. We look forward to meeting you!
